If you stay anywhere long enough, you'll inevitably see some changes. Even when you know that hometowns all across the country have been torn down and built up over and over again–just like yours, it doesn't make it feel any less personal. Tomo Nakayama and I both grew up here in the Seattle Area and have had a front row seat to the buildings and cranes sprouting in our skyline while we, like everyone else, find ways to stay in the city we love. When Tomo and I first started planning the release of Melonday, he sent me the album and the closing track really got me right in the gut. "There Goes the Neighborhood" is a pop song, but one that cuts deep into anyone feeling the uncertainty of progress and the future of home.

In the months of planning the record, we never once specifically talked about this song until I woke up one morning and told Tomo about my idea for the video. We were on the same page. This would also be our first real artistic collaboration. All the photos in the video were made from Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides of the Pacific Northwest in the 1950s to the 1970s that I've collected over time. Some belonged to my family and some once belonged to strangers that visited the Seattle World's Fair, Pioneer Square and rode the Monorail. 

Longtime fans of Tomo Nakayama will hear the obvious stylistic departure from the folk albums you've gotten to know over the years, but the same voice and heart run through Melonday in the best way.

From fronting beloved indie band Grand Hallway, to playing guitar for legendary Sunny Day Real Estate singer Jeremy Enigk, Tomo Nakayama has spent the entirety of this young millennium building his name on sensitive, intricate, mostly acoustic music in the folk/chamber-pop/singer-songwriter realm. But after two critically acclaimed solo albums, he’d hit a particularly long and frustrating creative dry spell. The tried and true process he had honed over the years was no longer working. He needed to clear his palette.
The result is Melonday. With the help of longtime collaborator Yuuki Matthews (producer/bassist of the Shins and Teardrops with late great Richard Swift), Nakayama created a beautiful shimmering electronic album that fits on a playlist right alongside Chromatics, M83 and Washed Out.

Tenderfoot is the gut-wrenchingly beautiful folk project led by Adam Woods. I met Adam years ago and asked him to play an intimate show at Porchlight opening for Waxahatchee. Along with the rest of the crowd, I was incredibly impressed with the vulnerability, openness and beauty of Adam's set. He has since gone on to record a perfect winter album with the help of Jude Miqueli, Gabriel Molinaro, and Darcey Zoller.
